Dear colleagues,
I got a telephone call by Gregg Treinish <gregg at adventurescience.org<mailto:gregg at adventurescience.org>> informing me that there will be three cruises with Kayaks between Seattle and Ketchikan. Participants are interested in supporting scientific efforts and carry a limited set of sensors/samples with them.
If you are interested please read below.

Expedition 1

Summary of Project (Just a Paragraph or two)
This June I will be kayaking from Seattle to Ketchikan Alaska with a partner. I am a high school biology and ecology teacher and it would be great if we could assist a researcher if possible along the way. The trip will take around 7.5 weeks and we will be camping as we go. We have a blog so that my students, friends and family can follow along and learn about the wilderness areas we will be traveling through. Please contact me if you have any questions. Expedition 3
Project Summary --

With the debris from the historic 2011 Tohoku earthquake reaching the Pacific Northwest coast ahead of its projected schedule, we are putting together a team of skilled sea-kayakers to document the debris as it begins to come ashore along the remote and roadless Washington coast. Our target area is the approximately 60 miles of pristine Olympic coastline starting from the village of Neah Bay in the north to Ruby Beach in the south, including a variety of coastal islands and sea stacks. Although portions of this area are accessible and frequented by hikers, our small maneuverable kayaks will afford us the opportunity to survey many beaches that are difficult to reach on foot. Our team is composed of three experienced professional guides, each having a multi-year resume including multiple trips and expeditions to remote coastal environments. The Olympic coast is an area with which each of us is familiar and we have previously done other extended trips along this wild and scenic stretch of shoreline. Pollution, specifically plastic and other floating debris, is a very real threat to untouched places like this one and we would like to be a part of better understanding and remediating the problem. Ikkatsu is a Japanese word that means "united as one," which is a concept that the tsunami debris illustrates in a powerful way. We are hopeful that our expedition will be of interest to a scientist or advisory board who can provide us with meaningful survey methods that can be used to further research and understanding of ocean currents and the problems posed by floating pollution.
