On Tuesday the strong bloom in Vaughn - Rocky Bay, Puget Sound Washington was dominated by Mesodinium rubrum.  As luck would have it a person was traveling through the bloom, stopped and took a water sample and dropped it off for SoundToxins volunteer Lizzie Nelson at Clam Fresh to look at.  With an excellent photo by Lizzie, Dr. Rita Horner was able to identify the blooming species as Mesodinium rubrum.  I've attached the photo and an informational sheet that Dr. Horner put together on Mesodinium rubrum for SoundToxins volunteers.  

I happen to be one of the SoundToxins volunteers sampling in North Bay, Case Inlet and have reviewed samples taken Monday morning (June 12) and Tuesday afternoon (June 13) and can confirm that there was a Coscinodiscus bloom with a couple of Protoperidinium and a few Dinophysis hanging out too.  There was no Heterosigma.  In talking with SoundToxins volunteer Sue Shotwell, Nisqually Tribe Shellfish Farm, at her Zittle's marine sampling site she had the same bloom of Coscinodiscus with a few Dinophysis as well.
