SoundHAB: Heterosigma in Nanaimo Harbour

For those of you interested in Heterosigma akashiwo blooms - we have a thick one in Nanaimo and surrounding waters as of this evening, July 19th.  The cell concentration in one sample taken off the dock at 7PM had approximately 5000 cells/mL Heterosigma, with very little other plankton present.  I am sure there were areas with higher cell counts in the harbour; orange-brown water of varying turbidity was widespread.
