A large scale Heterosigma bloom has been present for the last 4 days
in the Burrard Inlet's outer harbor. This bloom was observed from
Spanish Banks to First Narrows, including in False Creek and English
Bay. The existence of this bloom could not be corroborated in other
nearby areas of of the Inlet.

Initial counts of a sample obtained in False Creek (under the Burrard
Bridge) contained 22400 cells/ml (22.4 million cells per L) in
average.

The biology of algae is a duty or a task,
That consumes the better portion of your time
In the sampling of waters from an ocean, or a flask,
Or a snowfield, or a gutter full of slime.
You get cold, and wet, and grubby; you get dusty, hot, and dry;
You get dismal, and dejected, and defied;
But you'll find that, if you are lucky - if you're good - and if you try,
You can do a little science on the side.
