Today there was an intense bloom in front of Poulsbo. It is another
perfect example of patchy distributions. This bloom ended at the
mouth of the inlet and was not visible anywhere around Bainbridge
Island, or near Silverdale.
The species composition is primarily the long spiky Ceratium fusus,
then Prorocentrum gracile with a good number of 6-8 cell Alexandrium
chains thrown in for good measure.
Also present are Oxyphysis, the cilliate Mesodinium, Scrippsiella,
Dinophysis, Polykrikos, Gyrodinium, Akashiwo sanguinium, a near lack
of all diatoms save one chain of Pseudonitchia, and four lonely
Heterosigma. :-(
Please contact me if you'd like samples or more photos.
