SoundHAB: Discovery Bay Heterosigma

Discovery Bay, on the north Olympic Peninsula had an impressive
Heterosigma bloom occuring over the 4th of July and beyond. Some
cells (~1000/ml) were seen in shore samples taken from shore on the
north side of Diamond Point, but the highest visible abundance was in
the water mass down in Discovery Bay near Beckett Point. This
situation highlights the usefulness of arial observations with bloom
work. I was sampling at the wrong water mass one mile away simply
because I had not been up in the airplane - I traveled by car this
weekend, and did not get up in the air to see around the corner until
Tuesday evening as we were leaving the peninsula. Needless to say, I
was disappointed to be leaving.

Figure 2 Aircraft instruments reflected in window. Highlights the
discontinuity in the water masses. Many thanks to Carl Peecher, for
providing excellent arial work, and the charged camera phone.
Figure 3: Looking Southwest, south of Garner on Discovery Bay. Wind
has been blowing down the bay from the northwest and has pushed the
bloom's surface waters in streaks towards the point.
