We are having a fairly widespread Heterosigma bloom in the northern
Vancouver Island / Broughton Archipelago area, with cell counts up to
19,000 cells/mL on July 10 (Broughton Lagoon), and reports of streaks
and patches in the Broughton area.
Last week there were moderate levels of Heterosigma in the Broughton
area, Sechlet Inlet and Barkley Sound, and low levels in Nanaimo and
Clayoquot Sound.
Rhizosolenia setigera was dominant in Nanaimo last week, but this week
(July 10 samples) we are seeing dinoflagellates dominant, especially
Ceratium fusus and Dinphysis acuminata (up to ~30 cells/mL).
