After her mother suffered and dies from ALS, CarolAnn Garratt flew around the world in 2003 to raise awareness and money for ALS research. In 2009 she and co-pilot Carol Foy set out again, but this time with the intention of breaking the world record for westward circumnavigation in a small plane. They were successful, with an overall speed twice that of the previous record. In 2011she set out again. Only this time the flight was Eastbound and with a mission to fly slowly and see many of the countries and meet the people she missed during her race around the globe. After 11 months she returned the U.S. and wrote a book about her adventures. Through her book sales she has raised over $518,000 for the ALS Therapy Development Institute. CarolAnn will be at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on October 11 at 7 p.m. in Redfield Auditorium, 45 Water Street, Woods Hole, to discuss and sell her book.
