Sierra Cape Cod’s virtual “3rd Tuesday Talk” series continues March 19 at 7 pm with Conservation Law Foundation’s Deanna Moran and Ali Hiple and Mass Audubon’s Heidi Ricci reviewing key aspects of the climate resilience regulations proposed by Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and discussing recommended changes plus next steps in protecting and restoring coastal resources while adapting to climate change. This Zoom event is open to all; time will be reserved for audience Q&A.

As climate change accelerates, structures built in coastal floodplains face increasing risks, and they degrade the resiliency functions provided by dunes, marshes, wetlands, and other natural features. MassDEP’s proposed regulations will for the first time restrict new development in the highest-risk areas, require redeveloped structures to be elevated, and prioritize nature-based solutions for improving resilience. DEP’s public comment period runs through April 30.

Deanna Moran is CLF’s Vice President for Healthy & Resilient Communities, and Ali Hiple is Senior Policy Analyst. Heidi Ricci is Director of Policy & Advocacy for Mass Audubon. During this “3rd Tuesday Talk,” they will highlight the most notable features of the regulations—including areas of pushback from developers, and provisions that need further strengthening or clarification. In addition, they will provide guidance for citizens and organizations interested in submitting comments to MassDEP.

Sierra Club is America’s largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization, with more than 3.8 million members and supporters. As part of Sierra Club's Massachusetts Chapter, the Cape Cod & Islands Group represents members and supporters in Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket counties.
