As the second installment in Sierra Club’s "Massachusetts is Ready for Offshore Wind” webcast series, this event will explore key opportunities and specific issues associated with the deployment of floating offshore wind turbines in the Gulf of Maine wind resource area. This area includes a research lease offered to the state of Maine plus zones east of Cape Cod designated for future commercial lease by the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). The event will run from 7 to 8 pm, with time for audience Q&A. Pre-registration is required here <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fact.sierraclub.org%2Fevents%2Fdetails%3Fformcampaignid%3D7013q0000029i7zAAA%26mapLinkHref%3D&data=05%7C02%7CSEMCO%40whoi.edu%7Cf95dcb885b494e6b699b08dc95fbf2f7%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638550157461293417%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C80000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=O90ey9llNWONuONd6vteeoc7y0lih0zeME7%2Bwxkb4%2B8%3D&reserved=0>.

On April 30, 2024, BOEM announced a proposed offshore wind energy auction in the Gulf of Maine for areas found to be potentially suitable for renewable energy development based on years of community engagement, scientific research, environmental characterization, and spatial modeling. These areas were selected to mitigate potential adverse impacts and conflicts while meeting national and state energy and climate goals. Proposed lease areas are in locations where water depths will require the use of floating offshore wind turbines, rather than conventional designs with foundations fixed to the seafloor.

This webinar will feature Dr. Habib Dagher, a global thought leader in the development and deployment of floating offshore wind technology. In addition, Sierra Club will highlight current opportunities for offshore wind advocacy, relating both to the Gulf of Maine and to projects sited south of the Cape & Islands region.

Dr. Habib Dagher, P.E. is the Bath Iron Works Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Maine and the founding Executive Director of the university’s Advanced Structures & Composites Center (ASCC), a National Science Foundation funded research center and world leader in the development of low-cost, high-performance structural composites. Dr. Dagher’s research and advocacy focus on sustainable infrastructure and energy systems. He leads the team that developed and deployed the pre-cast concrete foundation for the VolturnUS 1:8 - the first grid-connected floating offshore wind turbine in the United States - and is planning the first full-scale US demonstration of the technology under a wind energy research lease within the Gulf of Maine. Dr. Dagher holds more than 80 patents, has over 100 publications, and has received numerous prestigious awards for his innovations and technical leadership.
