Seasonal Ecological Education Intern

a motivated, self-reliant individual with an interest in ecological
education, scientific communication, outreach, and conservation. This
field-based position will allow the intern to gain experience working on a
variety of projects spanning across these areas, with training and
mentorship from senior staff. LLNF conducts education programs for people
of all ages and backgrounds. The successful applicant will assist with
educational programming including planning, development of activities, and
implementation. These activities primarily take place at LLNF’s 275-acre
property but also include field trips and programs off-site.
* Responsibilities*:
- Assist with educational activities for children including planning and
preparation;
- Assist with adult education activities (speaker series, community
science workshops, etc.);
- Assist with Nature Rambles on the property for visitors and/or
offsite Birding Field Trips;
- Develop curriculum and ideas for new educational programming at LLNF;
- Science communication via writing blog posts, social media posts,
videos, and other educational materials;
- Develop and update interpretive materials around the property;
- Complete an independent education or outreach project;
- Participate in research projects and property stewardship to gain
knowledge and experience of LLNF’s work and be able to develop education
programs that are directly relevant.
- Training and guidance will be given for all tasks.
*Desired Qualifications*: B.S. or B.A. (or working towards such a degree)
in any field. Strong observational, critical thinking, and organizational
skills. Individuals must be able to work both independently and as a member
of a team. Experience with ecological, environmental, or outdoor education
is a plus. Interest in community science and communicating science to a
broad audience. Knowledge of Nantucket’s unique ecosystems is helpful but
not required. CPR/First Aid/AED training is required before starting
position. If you are not currently trained, LLNF will pay for and help
coordinate training for you.
*Dates/Hours*: This is a full-time, temporary position beginning in
late-May and ending in late-August; exact dates are somewhat flexible. The
intern will be expected to work five days a week, with a total number of
weekly hours not to exceed 40. Most days will average between seven to
eight hours. Some additional weekend and evening work may be required, and
LLNF will provide the intern proper notice in advance should this be
needed.
