Sierra Cape Cod’s virtual speaker series continues Tuesday, September 19 at 7 pm with a talk by State Representative Dylan Fernandes addressing the highest-impact approach for achieving the net-zero goals established for Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. This event is free and open to all; time will be reserved for audience Q&A.

Now in his fourth term serving Nantucket, Dukes County, and portions of Falmouth, Rep. Fernandes focuses on climate change, affordabie housing, public health, economic development, and social justice issues and is recognized as a leader in efforts to localize the benefits from offshore wind projects.

As construction of Vineyard Wind continues, several developers are competing to secure state-brokered utility power purchase agreements (PPAs) needed for financing future projects. In this talk, Rep. Fernandes will review key provisions of state law enacted in 2022, as well as proposed legislation (H. 3161 <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmalegislature.gov%2FBills%2F193%2FH3161&data=05%7C01%7CSEMCO%40whoi.edu%7Ca654f4ee460e4af8c99a08dbb84411f8%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638306374724616889%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=%2Foi1sa2QJqkTXDp%2BBTYqGb%2BCXLRQbr7RVrYZMhFx%2FQE%3D&reserved=0>), designed to help municipal aggregations like the Cape Light Compact, as well as individual towns and federally recognized tribes, enter into long-term PPAs with these developers. He also will highlight the broad base of support for offshore wind power purchasing on Martha’s Vineyard—and the anticipated benefits.

By encouraging Cape Light Compact to commit to buying as much offshore wind as possible, climate advocates have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to promote deployment of additional turbines for not only decarbonizing our electricity supply but also ensuring that heat pumps and electric vehicles run on clean energy, not electricity generated by burning fracked gas. Making offshore wind accessible to all local consumers, on an equitable basis, also will deliver rate stability and resilience to market disruptions like those that have driven electricity prices to unprecedented levels over the past year.
