Sierra Cape Cod’s virtual speaker series continues Tuesday, October 17 at 7 pm with a talk by Betty Ludtke, a member of the Barnstable Town Council and a commercial pilot, voicing economic and environmental objections to the proposed expansion of the Cape Cod Gateway Airport. In addition, Alex Chatfield representing Stop Private Jet Expansion <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.stopprivatejetexpansion.org%2F&data=05%7C01%7CSEMCO%40whoi.edu%7C899d06a1a7cc4f241f8c08dbce493716%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638330586078953779%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=lhIDIVKff15CpCvz1xQxsr1AIVdw%2Buw2RfawwlGv%2BSg%3D&reserved=0> will discuss the outsized carbon footprint of the corporate jets supporting continued airport operation in Hyannis and driving the proposed expansion of Hanscom Airfield in Bedford, MA. This Zoom event is open to all; time will be reserved for audience Q&A.
Cape Cod Gateway Airport is in the process of finalizing a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) to support proposed expansions under a master plan extending to 2040. The airport is located in a densely populated area, and commercial passenger traffic has collapsed leaving private jets and fuel sales as the primary sources of revenue. In addition, the airport’s historical use of PFAS-containing firefighting foams has contaminated soil and groundwater, resulting in a plume that threatens the sole-source aquifer and surface waters in Barnstable and Yarmouth. This “3rd Tuesday Talk" is intended to increase awareness and encourage participation during the upcoming public comment period on the DEIS.
Betty Ludtke is a Barnstable Town Councilor representing residents living in Precinct 3, the southwestern portion of the village of Hyannis. She retired from the Air Force in 2013 after having attained the rank of Colonel based on 30 years of combined service in active and reserve duty, including leadership positions at the Pentagon and on missions and bases in the US and abroad. Currently, Ms. Ludtke is a pilot for American Airlines.
