*Marine Debris Operations Assistant*
*Category*: Full Time, Salaried position (40 hours per week)
*Program:* Marine Debris & Plastics
The Center for Coastal Studies’ Marine Debris & Plastics Program is a
regional leader in investigating and removing marine debris including
abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG or “ghost
gear”), and evaluating marine debris impacts on coastal and marine habitats
of the Gulf of Maine and other areas. The program provides educational
resources and activities that encourage the responsible use and
conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems and collaborates with local
and regional institutions and individuals to advance programmatic goals nad
the Center for Coastal Studies’ mission. This position is designed to be a
3-year commitment starting January 2024. Annual salary $50k.
*General Responsibilities:*
· Support Program Manager with outreach, reports, and presentations;
· Assist with at-sea and shore-based ghost gear recovery work;
· Communicate with commercial fishing industry, marine debris
artists and volunteers;
· Handle fishing gear during removals and disposal efforts,
including transport to recycling facilities;
· Organize and maintain field equipment;
· Support Beach Brigade volunteers in debris removals and data
collection.
*Requirements:*
· B.S. or B.A. in a related field, Master’s Degree in marine policy
preferred;
· Two years’ experience with field work or data collection;
· Attention to detail and ability to work independently while
meeting deadlines;
· Proficiency in Excel, Access, Publisher, and GIS Software;
· Experience administering grants and contracts;
· Comfort working with datasets;
· Ability to work closely with commercial fisheries and volunteers;
· Current Driver's License;
· Physical requirements include standing for several hours, the
ability to pick up to 50 pounds, and comfort in an outdoor environment;
· Work remotely and in an office setting; be willing to travel for
fieldwork.
