Sierra Cape Cod’s virtual speaker series continues on Tuesday, May 16 at 7 pm with a focus on PFAS contamination of water supplies and ponds in Hyannis and neighboring communities. Featured speaker Tom Cambareri, founder of Sole Source Consulting LLC, will discuss the sources and extent of contamination, as well as current and planned management options. After a question-and-answer session, Dr. Laurel Schaider, senior scientist at Silent Spring Institute, will highlight volunteer recruitment for federally funded research to quantify PFAS exposure pathways and health impacts for Hyannis residents.
Tom Cambareri has more than 3 decades of experience helping understand and protect water resources on Cape Cod. Based on analysis and modeling of field data—including kayak-based sampling of ponds in Hyannis and neighboring areas <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpfasproject.com%2F2021%2F10%2F05%2Fpfas-contamination-of-21-barnstable-ponds-tested-21-had-contaminants-town-report-finds%2F&data=05%7C01%7CSEMCO%40whoi.edu%7Cf7aa80ca0ebc4178dcbf08db553ee35a%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638197500829953845%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=7aALLilfpOmb2E61p8XSWdS8kLOkoXWn%2FSN7R5Oj%2Bgo%3D&reserved=0>—he will identify primary and secondary PFAS sources and explain how current approaches to managing contaminated soil and groundwater attributable to historical use of firefighting and other chemicals at and immediately north of the Hyannis airport are likely to result in continuing contamination of water resources and pond ecosystems in Barnstable and Yarmouth.
Dr. Schaider has led multiple studies exploring and documenting linkages between septic system discharges, drinking water contamination, and public health on Cape Cod and currently is lead scientist for the "PFAS & Your Health" Study <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsilentspring.org%2Fproject%2Fcdcatsdr-multi-site-health-study-pfas%2Fmassachusetts-pfas-and-your-health-study&data=05%7C01%7CSEMCO%40whoi.edu%7Cf7aa80ca0ebc4178dcbf08db553ee35a%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638197500829953845%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=pDN1rH%2FRyfTQMawtpeBPHEHbJr3slPxJ75Zt%2FPIMXM8%3D&reserved=0> in Hyannis and Ayer, Massachusetts, part of the "PFAS Multi-Site Study <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.atsdr.cdc.gov%2Fpfas%2Factivities%2Fstudies%2Fmulti-site.html%3FCDC_AA_refVal%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.atsdr.cdc.gov%2Fpfas%2FMulti-Site-Health-Study.html&data=05%7C01%7CSEMCO%40whoi.edu%7Cf7aa80ca0ebc4178dcbf08db553ee35a%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638197500829953845%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=TvxaARSVTU946ojvoyw01PiKSXLeXtY1JwHuI9ZHO6U%3D&reserved=0>" funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and its Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Laurel will detail how Sierra members and supporters can join a May 20 canvassing effort in Hyannis and otherwise help her team reach current and former residents and recruit additional adults and children as CDC study participants.
