Sierra Cape Cod Hosts Zoom Talk on 2023’s Cape-Wide Plastic Reduction Campaign
7 pm, Tuesday, February 2023 via Zoom
Sierra Cape Cod’s monthly speaker series continues Tuesday, February 21 at 7 pm with a Zoom update from Madhavi Venkatesan, PhD, on plastic reduction bylaws proposed by citizens organized through Sustainable Practices Ltd., a local nonprofit. The talk is free and open to the public.
This year’s campaign focuses on foodware container and utensil bylaws, building on previous successes with single-use water bottle bans <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsustainablepracticesltd.org%2F&data=05%7C01%7CSEMCO%40whoi.edu%7Cf91b0de609bc4c7f511f08db1411bc34%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638125838618906703%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=M4KlGkYpIc1tq0gKrctz8xLEcYKrHfth%2FOg5eDWZBcg%3D&reserved=0>. Town Meeting bylaw petitions have been submitted or are planned by citizens in Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Eastham, Falmouth, Harwich, Mashpee, Sandwich, Orleans, and Provincetown. Sustainable Practices also is pursuing bans on commercial sale of single-use plastic water bottles in Sandwich, Mashpee, Dennis, and Yarmouth. In addition to being the nonprofit’s founder and executive director, Dr. Venkatesan is editor-in-chief of the journal Sustainability and Climate Change and an associate teaching professor of economics at Northeastern University.
At the February 21 Sierra meeting, discussion and Q&A will center around getting out the vote and countering opposition at upcoming Town Meetings.
