Sierra Cape Cod’s virtual speaker series continues Tuesday, December 19 at 7 pm with featured speaker Laura Kelley of Protect Our Cape Cod Aquifer (POCCA) introducing the fertilizer and pesticide control articles adopted by Orleans Town Meeting. In addition to being presented to the Massachusetts Legislature as home rule petitions, these articles provide a template for empowering other communities to supersede lax state standards and restrict fertilizer and pesticide use on the Cape, where reliance on sole-source aquifers increases vulnerabilities. This Zoom event is open to all; time will be reserved for audience Q&A.

Laura Kelley is a local water quality activist and educator through POCCA and practitioner through Littlefield Landscapes. She helped encourage and support town officials and residents in approving the pesticide and fertilizer management restrictions at 2022-23 Orleans Town Meetings <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.town.orleans.ma.us%2F1335%2FPesticide-Home-Rule-Petition-2023&data=05%7C02%7CSEMCO%40whoi.edu%7C1741f5ce08e44e0710f808dbffd4d7c6%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638385064961995204%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C20000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=7FieWSJQ7XcuBFlexxIefGVTSF8u1e3L2QsN8lLXI50%3D&reserved=0>. These measures are intended to accelerate water quality improvement as the town develops wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure. To build on Orleans’ leadership and assist Rep. Sarah Peake in making the case for enactment of the town's home rule petitions, Laura is leading a grassroots effort to encourage other communities to take similar action to protect our pollinators, ecosystems, and residents and to reduce pollution of groundwater, ponds and rivers, and coastal embayments.
