The theme for this year is exploring local environmental issues: what is being done in the ponds, streams, and marshes in the area to preserve our natural resources that are part of the identity of Cape Cod.

Matt Charette is a Senior Scientist in Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Prior to his appointment as director of WHOI Sea Grant, he was director of WHOI's Coastal Ocean Institute. He received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Oceanography from the Florida Institute of Technology and University of Rhode Island-Graduate School of Oceanography, respectively. His main research focus has been on submarine groundwater discharge and its role in transporting chemicals to the ocean. He currently serves on the advisory board of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and is a member of the Falmouth (MA) Water Quality Management Committee, which is charged by the town with developing a comprehensive wastewater management plan for the town's eutrophic estuaries.
