Press Release September 21, 202 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Robin Lord, 774-236-9602 rlord at capecodclimate.org Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative Announces Signature Event - “Net Zero 2022” October 28, 2022 Virtual Conference South Yarmouth, Sept.21, 2022, Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative’s Fifth Annual NET ZERO 2022 conference (NZ-22), Bringing it Home: Tackling Climate Change on the Cape & Islands, will be held on Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Registration for this free event is now open on the Climate Collaborative’s website at capecodclimate.org/nz-22/. The conference features four main segments, with topics ranging from offshore wind to local action. Presenters are regional, state, national, and international experts in climate mitigation and sustainability. Leading speakers include: Søren Hermansen, director of Denmark’s Energy Academy and the driving force behind the transformation of Samsø Island into a world-renowned model of renewable energy; Joseph Curtatone, president of New England Clean Energy Council (NECEC) and long-term mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts who has earned an international reputation as one of the most innovative and climate-forward mayors in the United States; and EPA Region 1 Administrator Dr. David Cash, who leads implementation of the Biden-Harris environmental agenda in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and in 10 Tribal Nations. NZ-22 welcomes anyone interested in learning about climate change impacts, opportunities, and the actions we can take regionally, locally, and individually as we transition to a clean energy future. The conference is geared to diverse audiences — homeowners, renters, business owners, service providers, environmental justice advocates, clean energy professionals, town staff, elected officials and citizen advocates. Conference sessions will focus on three major areas: 1. Offshore Wind: Impacts, Benefits & Opportunities - As Massachusetts ramps up to harness the highest offshore wind capacity in the U.S., learn how industry, public and private sectors address environmental impacts and ensure diverse, equitable and inclusive offshore wind energy for Cape Cod. 2. Buildings, Climate & Equity - Buildings account for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions on Cape Cod, while communities of color and individuals of low-moderate income are disproportionately affected by skyrocketing energy costs. Learn about Cape Light Compact's vast array of incentives, rebates, and programs that help mitigate the climate crisis and save money for regional consumers. Homeowners, businesses, nonprofits and housing service providers will share stories about actionable and accessible resources that help them reap cost- and energy-saving benefits for themselves and their clientele. 3. Climate Action: Thinking Regionally & Acting Locally - Federal and state policies are essential to addressing and planning for climate change. But locally is where the rubber meets the road. Municipal officials, climate action professionals, regional planners, and members of the Climate Collaborative will share tools, resources and approaches to drive comprehensive climate action planning at the local level and help mobilize individual climate action. Dorothy Savarese, president of the Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative said, “These are exciting times for tackling climate change as recent landmark federal and state legislation will unleash substantial resources for regional and local climate action. Our focus this year is on Bringing It Home and the myriad ways our region and communities can seize emerging opportunities.” Executive Director Rich Delaney added, “Private, public and nonprofit sectors and individual citizens must join this critical effort. We need all hands on deck to combat the climate crisis, so please tune into Net Zero 2022 to learn about actions you can take to help make a difference." Participation is free, thanks to generous support provided by Presenting Sponsor Cape Light Compact and others, including Cape Air, Cape Cod 5, Avangrid, Vineyard Wind 1, and Mayflower Wind.
