in Norwell, Massachusetts. The NSRWA’s purpose is to protect our waters
through education, outdoor engagement, and restoration of our rivers.
The North and South Rivers Watershed Association (NSRWA) seeks a part-time
staff person, the Indian Head River Restoration Coordinator, to provide
project management through April 30, 2024, to coordinate examining the
feasibility of dam removal at the Curtis Crossing and State Street dams to
restore and reconnect habitat of the Indian Head River located in Hanover,
Pembroke and Hanson Massachusetts. The Indian Head River is a main
tributary of the North River and is home to various species of concern
including American shad, American eel, river herring, and Eastern native
brook trout. Currently, the dams are preventing free passage of these
species limiting access to spawning habitat, in addition, dams have other
impacts on the river’s health.
The coordinator will be responsible for coordinating on behalf of the NSRWA
with project partners including the towns of Hanover, Hanson, and Pembroke
(the dam owners), the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration, and
the Massachusetts Natural Resources Damages Trust Fund. The coordinator
will be responsible for retaining and managing qualified engineering
contractors as well as public outreach and engagement efforts to create a
shared vision for this potential river restoration project. A preliminary
study was funded by the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration in
2021, further engineering work is required to understand the feasibility
and costs of removal and to engage the communities that own the
infrastructure in better understanding their vision of the future of the
Indian Head River. Public education will be needed to aid the community in
making an informed decision.
Qualities We Seek
- Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources Management or a similar field,
or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five years of work experience as a conservation professional
- Three years of experience in dam removal, river restoration, or
closely related fields
- Demonstrated success in managing projects involving multiple partners,
stakeholders, and personnel
- Experience facilitating group discussions toward consensus-building,
including with local communities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly with
translating technical or scientific information for the public to aid in
decision making
- Experience using applications such as Google products, Microsoft Word,
Excel, and social media. ArcGIS or mapping experience is a plus.
This part-time position is grant funded through April 30, 2024, for a total
of 1,060 hours at $32-35/hour. Staff are expected to be in the office at
least once per week and must be able to meet on-site and with partners as
needed. Must have their own license and insured vehicle. Mileage to
work-related meetings is reimbursable. Hours are flexible, night meetings
may be needed to engage with town committees and the public but generally
work is to be performed during regular working hours.
