"Solid Waste and Diversion Options for Cape Cod: Regional Study Results & Next Steps"
7 - 8 pm, July 19 via Zoom
Sierra Cape Cod is hosting a virtual forum on regional solid waste management and diversion options on Tuesday, July 19, from 7 to 8 pm, focusing on key findings arising from recent studies funded by Barnstable County. Featured speakers include Patty Daley, legal and policy specialist, Cape Cod Commission; Kari Parcell, municipal assistance coordinator, Cape Cod Cooperative Extension; and Michele White, special projects coordinator, Cape Cod Commission.
Discussion will center around the following high-level conclusions from the County-funded studies, along with next steps by agencies, towns, and other stakeholders:
- Regional coordination and cooperation are essential in achieving economies of scale.
- Out-of-state rail transport for landfill disposal is the “optimal long-term solution” for Cape Cod communities.
- Organics diversion is the most promising option for reducing disposal costs and related emissions.
- Joint Base Cape Cod is a possible site for new processing, diversion, and conversion infrastructure.
