Massachusetts Archaeological Society Cape Cod Chapter presents:

>From Wood and Bone

with Dr. Calvin Mires

BREWSTER, MA —The Massachusetts Archaeological Society Cape Cod Chapter presents From Wood and Bone: how dendrochronology and eDNA are helping maritime archaeologists understand or find material and human remains with Dr. Calvin Mires Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at 7:00 pm at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History 869 Main Street/Route 6A Brewster. This program will also be available virtually to MAS Cape Cod Chapter Members.

Please join Dr. Calvin Mires as he discusses two of his current research projects in maritime archaeology -- both very different in age and methods, but each reinforcing the crucial role of interdisciplinary collaboration between humanities and the sciences to uncover or find the secrets of the past. The first are recent findings from dendrochronology project on the 1626 shipwreck, Sparrow-Hawk. The second discusses an innovative study of the potential of eDNA (environmental-DNA) in locating human remains on WWII submerged sites for the Department of Defense POW/MIAA Accounting Agency.

Calvin Mires, Ph.D., is a maritime archaeologist and Research Associate III at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution with over 20 years of experience leading projects around the world and running training programs in Massachusetts through DiveArc, Seafaring Education and Heritage Maritime Program (SEAMAHP), Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) and the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources (MBUAR). He has received grants from the National Park Service Maritime Heritage Program and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and has published in journals such as The International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, Marine Ecology, and The Society for Historical Archaeology.
