Restoration Ecologist



Summary:  The Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC), a leading organization in environmental protection for over five decades, is recruiting for a Restoration Ecologist. APCC is seeking an experienced and visionary technician who will help advance the goals of the Cape Cod Restoration Coordination Center (RCC). The Center provides technical, planning, monitoring, permitting and project management support to Cape Cod communities interested in completing ecological restoration projects.



This position will report the RCC manager and is a temporary full-time position to begin in August 2021 and continue into spring of 2022, with extension to permanent position pending performance review, project need, and ability to secure funding. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience. Terms and conditions of employment flexible and subject to mutual agreement of APCC and selected candidate.

JOB SUMMARY

Working under the direct supervision of the RCC manager the Restoration Ecologist will carry out the essential duties and responsibilities and supervisory responsibilities described below.  Other duties may be assigned.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  *   Collect and analyze data and conduct site assessments to describe habitats and environmental conditions and to determine restoration needs.
  *   Manage salt marsh restoration monitoring projects including but not limited to vegetation surveys, vegetation mapping (in field and GIS), tidal hydrology, water quality sampling, and photo-documentation.
  *   Maintain field equipment in working order and manage purchasing and tracking of RCC field equipment and supplies.
  *   Work with and train volunteers and/or seasonal interns to assist with assessment and monitoring projects.
  *   Manage projects with and effectively communicate findings of environmental studies or project deliverables to APCC staff, engineers, town officials, state or federal partners, local non-profit partners, and regulatory agencies.
  *   Work effectively with multiple partners and constituents to plan, initiate, manage and complete restoration projects.
  *   Manage multi-year restoration projects from planning to completion.
  *   Create habitat management and restoration plans including plans consistent with the Cape Cod Clean Water Act Section 208 Plan, the Cape Cod Water Resources Restoration Program, the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration program and other regional restoration programs.
  *   Assist partners with or provide project management of restoration projects, including but not limited to:
     *   Coordination of partners and stakeholder meetings;
     *   Preparation of restoration plans;
     *   Preparation of project timelines and budgets;
     *   Drafting and submission of grant applications;
     *   Review and comment on design plans, permit applications, and other technical documents for restoration projects;
     *   Hiring and managing subcontractors to assist with planning, design, assessment, permitting and construction oversight;
     *   Preparing and providing outreach and education to the public on restoration including presentations, online and print materials;
     *   Grant and project administration including contracting, invoicing, match tracking and reporting to funders;
     *   Preparation of reports, assessments, and other information in a timely manner.
  *   Provide technical guidance and support to other staff members and project partners engaged in ecological restoration projects.
  *   Provide APCC members and the public with program information when requested, in person or via telephone, mail, electronic mail, or social media.
  *   In collaboration with other staff, write and place articles and program information in our newsletter, website, press releases, social media and other appropriate venues and disseminate program information related to APCC restoration efforts.
  *   Participate in organization fundraising and special events.



QUALIFICATIONS



Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree in natural science, environmental science, restoration ecology, conservation environmental engineering or similar field of studies from a four-year college or university and/or an equivalent number of years of experience working in the field of ecological restoration; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A master’s degree is preferred.



A minimum of three (3) years relevant experience demonstrating competence in the essential job elements described above in carrying out successful restoration projects including salt marsh, river, cranberry bog, freshwater wetland and fish passage projects and/or green infrastructure stormwater management projects to improve water quality.



Thorough knowledge of Cape Cod natural history and environment, especially water quality related areas. Ability to identify plants (salt marsh vegetation in particular) typical of Cape Cod.



Knowledge of PC-based computers and software, including Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), and electronic mail. Ability to effectively use Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping software and equipment. Familiarity with ArcDesktop and ArcOnline software, data loggers, and Trimble Geo7x (in particular) is a plus.
