*Young Mariner Camp Director*
*Cape Cod Maritime Museum*The Cape Cod Maritime Museum is a 20 year-old
institution located at the head of Hyannis inner harbor. Please visit our
website at www.capecodmaritimemuseum.org to learn more about us, our
mission, programs, and exhibits.
*Young Mariner Program*
The Young Mariner Program is a new, multidisciplinary course designed to
introduce young people to maritime culture, science, and seamanship in a
hands-on manner. Focused on middle school age children, this
short-day camp will run from mid-June through early September (summer
break) and will be taught onboard Cape Cod Maritime vessels and at the
Museum.
*ADVENTURE SARAH*
Each class of 12 students will attend four, half-day sessions (Monday
through Thursday) designed to provide them with the following experiences.
1. History Tour of Lewis Bay onboard ADVENTURE, a Dyer 29 inboard
motorboat. Key components of this are team building on day one and getting
the kids off shore far enough to be exciting. Activities may include
comparing some vintage photos with existing shoreline, and other historical
markers (boats, navigational aids and structures) of maritime evolution.
2. History of Boats. Using the Museum as a class room, this will be a
guided tour day designed to describe the beginning of local maritime
culture and introduce them to the types of boats and activities that drive
the waterfront then and now. Hands-on activities maritime-based STEM
activities will take place after the tour.
3. Marine Biology. This is the largest component of the program
comprising 3 of the 8 sessions. This will be an onshore and offshore
specimen collection and identification activity, combined with
water sampling and other age appropriate experiments that introduce
students to the basics of marine biology.
4. Navigation and Seamanship. Navigation and seamanship will be baked
into each session that a pod spends on either SARAH of ADVENTURE. The
Captain and Camp Director will encourage kids to man the lines, learn some
knots, man the bumpers, etc. This specific session will be a deeper dive
into the basics of how a chart works, identifying marks and shore
configurations, concepts of range finding, and demonstration of modern
navigation equipment.
5. Boat Building. Introduction to the basics of boatbuilding in the
Museum’s Cook Boat shop.
6. Basics of Sailing. Use SARAH to have each pod experience sailing on
an old-fashioned gaff rigged catboat. Basic introduction of the points of
sail, and aerodynamics of sailing as well as an appreciation for the manual
labor and basic equipment that sailing entails. In addition to this
program, CCMM is considering offering an additional series of shorter “boot
camp” activities on Friday and Saturday.
The overarching goal of the Young Mariner Program is to introduce Cape Cod
residents as well as visitors to the widest possible array of maritime
experiences in the hope that we instill an appreciation of, and a
