Registration required: a zoom link will be sent to you before the presentation.

Tuesdays, 6:30-7:30PM

Join us from the comfort of your home for an informal evening learning about innovative research happening around Waquoit Bay.

Each session you will meet a local scientist who will share how they do their research, what they are discovering, and how it applies to today’s issues. There will be ample time for questions and discussion.

Brew up a hot drink, settle down into your favorite armchair and join us to learn something new. We can’t provide the cookies this year, but each week we’ll provide a favorite staff cookie recipe you can try on your own.

Managing Mosquitos in Marshes

Tuesday, January 26

In 2018 Massachusetts had a record number of mosquitos test positive for West Nile Virus and in 2019 a record number tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Cape Cod Mosquito Control personnel work year round following an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to reduce mosquito populations and risk of virus transmission in our area. Hear about the work they’ve been doing on South Cape Beach and other Reserve properties and find out how you can protect yourself from mosquito borne disease.

Aubrey Paolino, Entomologist, Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project

Barrier Beaches:
Specialized Habitat for Rare Moths

Tuesday, February 9

Coastal dune systems have been under-surveyed for moths. Two barrier beach systems, Dead Neck at South Cape Beach in Mashpee, and Horseneck in Westport were chosen for a season-long survey in 2019. This presentation will highlight the rich moth fauna present, differences in habitats between the two systems, some of the rare species present, and implications for management.

Mark Mello, Research Director at the Lloyd Center for the Environment

Trends in Water Quality in Response to Urbanization across Waquoit Bay

Tuesday, February 23

Researchers from MBL have been studying the input, distribution and fate of nutrients, and the responses of plankton in several Waquoit Bay estuaries with different levels of development. They have found marked differences in nutrients and phytoplankton in different areas, as well as differences in concentrations depending on the time of year. Hear about their findings and how they can be applied locally or globally.

Kelsey Chenoweth, Research Assistant, Marine Biological Laboratory

The Underappreciated Rivers
of Cape Cod

Tuesday, March 9

Dr. Holmes studies rivers around the world, including in the Arctic and the tropics, but for this presentation he’ll be highlighting rivers closer to home. The Cape Cod Rivers Observatory focuses world class river science on these hidden treasures of the Cape. Hear what they’ve been finding out about the Quashnet and eight other rivers. Get introduced to the recently launched Science on the Fly, which aims to unite the fly fishing and science communities to study and protect rivers around the world.

Max Holmes, Deputy Director and Senior Scientist, Woodwell Climate Research Center

Microplastics in the Salt Marshes of Waquoit Bay:
A Story of Urbanization & Plastic Waste

Tuesday, March 23

An increasing number of studies confirm the presence of microplastics (particles smaller than 5mm) in almost every single ecosystem on Earth. Dr. Lloret has been studying microplastic pollution in the estuaries and marshes of Waquoit Bay. His results show that microplastics have been accumulating in Waquoit Bay salt marshes over the course of several decades. Why is this happening and what are the implications?

Javier Lloret, PhD, Research Scientist, The Ecosystems Center, Marine Biological Laboratory
