 6-month, part-time

April 1 – September 30, 2021



The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) is offering to a Cape-based college
student a six-month Internship in its Marine Debris & Plastics program. The
Intern will work closely with CCS staff and volunteers on marine debris
removal projects, data analysis and community outreach, and may integrate
with relevant CCS programs (e.g. fisheries, geology, education, rescue) for
field work and data collection. The Intern will interface with the general
public virtually and in person, and will have the opportunity to work with
scientists, commercial and recreational fishermen, shellfish farmers and
artists. Intern will assist with generating outreach and report materials
for various digital and social media outlets. The Internship will culminate
in a capstone presentation to the CCS community reflective of the overall
experience and discoveries made, which may also integrate with academic
goals. This position reports to the CCS Marine Debris & Plastics program
coordinator.



Key Responsibilities:

·       Assist program coordinator in organizing shoreline cleanups and
conducting seasonal field work

·       Maintain and further develop marine debris database and on-line
reporting mechanisms

·       Attend debris cleanups, collect and inventory marine debris, tally
and enter data

·       Conduct monthly marine debris monitoring cleanups at designated
beaches

·       Generate social media or blog posts to enhance program outreach and
education

·       Present a final capstone project as part of CCS public webinar or
seminar program



Key Job Requirements:

·       Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Power
Point) and databases

·       Comfort with using social media platforms such as Facebook,
Instagram, web logs

·       Familiarity with issue of marine plastic debris, recycling, and
single-use plastic bans

·       Demonstrated teamwork and interpersonal approach

·       Attention to detail and ability to be self-directed with minimal
guidance

·       Excellent written and oral communication skills

Transportation and housing are the responsibility of the Intern.



Physical Requirements & Work Environment:  Field work is conducted on the
shores of Cape Cod Bay and along the Cape Cod National Seashore. Data and
some outreach work can be conducted from home; occasional lab work may be
required. Comfort with working outdoors; carrying or dragging loads 50-100
pounds; and safely handling debris is required. Field work schedule is
land-based and weather-dependent; data input and analysis requires a mix of
on-site debris inventory and home-based office work. Occasional weekend
hours will be required. Number of hours worked each week will be
project-dependent and mutually agreed to by Intern and program coordinator,
not to exceed 20 hours/wk.



Salary and Benefits: The Internship will provide a small stipend of $700/mo
and workman’s comp coverage during field work activities.
