WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION
Dear Friend:
Happy New Year! I am writing to express my very best wishes and sincere thanks
for your support as WHOI shifts its momentum into 2020. This past year has been
marked by a number of significant accomplishments at the Institution, all of
which will help sustain our position as a world leader in ocean science.
Just a few noteworthy examples:
* The first successful sea trials of two new WHOI underwater vehicles—Mesobot
and Deep-See—were conducted. These vehicles are instrumental in helping to
illuminate the dark and mysterious Ocean Twilight Zone—one of Earth’s largest
habitats—so scientists can track its biomass and biodiversity there, as well
as the behavior of individual animals.
* A $7.6 million, five-year WHOI-led project was funded by NASA that aims to
understanding the potential for life beyond Earth. The program builds on
WHOI’s existing Exploring Ocean Worlds (ExOW) project by pulling together
some of the nation’s leading experts in ocean and space research, along with
a new research network to facilitate ocean worlds research at academic and
research institutions nationwide.
* Plans were approved for the construction of a $27 million, 50,000-square-foot
building on WHOI’s Quissett campus.
2020 will be another exciting year for WHOI as we build on this momentum. It
will also be a time for great celebration: January 6th marks the Oceanographic’s
90th anniversary!
A great deal has changed since the Institution’s founding in 1930, but one thing
has remained constant: WHOI’s unwavering commitment to advancing our
understanding of the ocean through excellence in ocean science, engineering, and
operations. It’s something that all of our talented oceanographers, engineers,
students, support staff, and friends of the Institution should take enormous
pride in.
Thank you for coming along for the ride!
Best wishes for a healthy and happy new year,
Mark Abbott
