THORNTON BURGESS NATURE PROGRAM FOR ADULTS

The Green Briar Nature Center in East Sandwich is excited to announce the
second year of the Thornton Burgess Nature Program for adults, which will
explore a variety of naturalist topics through all seasons. The Program
draws its inspiration from Burgess's passion for natural history and
learning. In the first half of the 20th Century, Burgess authored 172 nature
based children's books, produced a syndicated natural history newspaper
column and radio show, and founded the Green Meadow Club, an environmental
education and conservation club for children and families that heralded a
new understanding of the delicate interrelations between species, as well as
a new attitude towards conservation. To Burgess, nature was the universal
teacher. Much has changed in the more than 100 years since Burgess began his
environmental efforts, but the need to understand the natural world is
greater than ever. Gone but not forgotten, the Thornton Burgess Nature
Program breathes new life into Burgess's passion for naturalist studies and
field observation.

Just as Burgess's interests were as broad and diverse as the landscapes and
wildlife he chronicled in his stories, so, too, will this program explore a
wide range of natural history topics. Join us on monthly expert-led walks
with topics ranging from entire habitats down to individual species. With
monthly meetings spanning April through December, this program is designed
not only to allow participants to delve deeper into subjects of interest,
but also to help them recognize and observe seasonal changes in our local
ecosystems. The only requirement is a curiosity for the natural world.

All programs occur on the first Saturday of the month from 10am-12pm at the
Green Briar Nature Center unless otherwise noted. The fee for all nine
sessions is $150 or register and pay by the month at $20 per session. Call
508-888-6870 or visit the website at <http://www.thorntonburgess.org>

Birding led by Alice Wynn is the first program in the series on Saturday,
April 6 from 10am to noon. This class will open with a 40-minute lecture on
the natural history, behavior, and general biology of bird species native to
Cape Cod, focusing specifically on the types of birds frequently found in
the habitats surrounding the Green Briar Nature Center and Smiling Pool.
Following this, we will take a hike on Green Briar's trails, identifying and
observing the species we encounter by sight and sound. Long pants,
appropriate footwear, bug spray, and a hat are highly recommended, along
with binoculars and/or a camera with high zoom capabilities. Alice Wynn has
been a naturalist at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History since 2011,
working as a docent, field guide, and aquarist. She is also one of the
animal caretakers at Green Briar Nature Center, and leads bird walks and
other nature programs at both locations. She has been an avid birdwatcher
since childhood. In 2018, she graduated from Suffolk University with a B.S.
in Biology/Marine Science.

Other programs in the series are: Pine-Oak Forests on May 4, Butterflies on
June 8, Salt Marsh on July 6, Wild Food on August 3, Wildflowers on
September 7, Insects' Winter Preparations on October 5, Lichens on November
7, and Winter Birding on December 7. Complete details are available on the
website at www.thorntonburgess.org.
