The talk will be held at 7:30 PM in the MBL’s Lillie Auditorium, 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole. It is the latest presentation in the 2018-2019 Falmouth Forum season<https://mbl.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d5338bbd21442d31e1b673fa3&id=b05dc455c5&e=12ac3a1937>.
The free series is presented by the Friends of the MBL and offered as a cultural connection between the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Cape Cod community. Free parking is available in any MBL lot.
Microplastics have become the focus of attention in the scientific community because of their documented prevalence in the environment (primarily marine and freshwater, but also terrestrial and as airborne particles). Plastic debris in the marine environment poses risks to marine organisms and habitats, and results from human dependence on these materials without a strategy for end-of-use management. This apparent ubiquity, especially of plastic fibers, drives concern about the risks of microplastics to animals that encounter them through ingestion and/or inhalation or gill uptake. Efforts to quantify the size of the problem and its impacts, as well as a toolbox of potential solutions will be discussed.
Kara Lavender Law is a research professor at the Sea Education Association (SEA). Law studies plastic marine debris using SEA's 25-year data set. Her interests include understanding how ocean physics determines the distribution of plastic and other marine debris, and the behavior and ultimate fate of different plastics exposed to the harsh ocean environment. She received her Ph.D. in physical oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Founded in Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1888, the MBL is a private, nonprofit institution and an affiliate of the University of Chicago.<https://mbl.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d5338bbd21442d31e1b673fa3&id=86ddf0fa3c&e=12ac3a1937>
The Friends of the MBL provide a vital connection between the MBL and the community. MBL Associates create and host local educational and cultural programs, sponsor promising students and early career investigators, and volunteer their time to the MBL.
