At Monday's Cape Cod Bird Club meeting at Cape Cod Museum of Natural History (7PM, free and open to all), Mark Faherty will be talking about how to become a better birder/naturalist using the wealth of apps and websites now available:
There's an App for That?? Computer and Smartphone Birding
Millions of apps) are now available for both Apple and Android smartphones, but which ones will really make a difference in your birding and naturalizing? And what about websites? We will give you the rundown on the latest and greatest apps for birding ranging from digital field guides (iBird, Sibley, etc.) to eBird and Merlin and international apps. And even if you think you know well-known apps like eBird and Merlin, they are adding new functionality all the time which may surprise you. We'll start with an overview of eBird, Cornell's massive bird sighting database that has revolutionized birding, and which underlies several of the key apps. We'll then demonstrate apps you can use to find birds in your area, plan for a trip to a foreign destination, and a great one to expedite your learning of bird songs. We'll even touch on the best traffic, weather, tide, and food-finding apps for getting yourself around and fed on your birding trips!
Mark has been the Science Coordinator at Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary since 2007 and has led birding trips for Mass Audubon since 2002. While his current projects involve everything from oysters and horseshoe crabs to bats and butterflies, he has studied primarily bird ecology for the last 20 years, working on research projects in Kenya, Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, Mexico, and the Pacific Northwest. He was a counter for the famous River of Raptors hawk watch in Veracruz, Mexico, and has birded Peru, Africa, Panama, Belize, and both Eastern and Western Europe. Mark leads workshops on birding by ear, eBird, birding apps, and general bird identification. He is past president of the Cape Cod Bird Club and member of the Massachusetts Avian Records Committee. Mark's weekly essay on Cape and Islands bird life, the "Bird Report", airs each Wednesday on the Cape and Islands NPR station, where he also co-hosts "Bird News", a monthly call-in show all about birds, on The Point with Mindy Todd.
