Summer Science School Teacher
Position Announcement


The Board of Directors of the Waquoit Bay Reserve Foundation (WBRF), a 501(c)3 organization, in partnership with the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (WBNERR), is seeking an energetic person with experience teaching children in an outdoor setting, to teach weekly sessions for children in grades 2 - 12,  from June through mid- August at the Waquoit Bay Reserve located at 131 Waquoit Highway, East Falmouth, MA. This is a seasonal contract position that does not provide any benefits. The contract term begins at the end of June and continues through mid-August, with training sessions to occur prior to the last week of June.  Pay is commensurate with experience.

Duties include:

  *   Attend up to three paid training/orientation sessions at the Waquoit Bay Reserve to work with Science School Director and Reserve Education staff to plan, design and organize summer school programs.

  *   Plan and teach up to 7 week-long educational sessions for children in grades 2 through 12 that encourage curiosity and passion in science and the natural world. This includes one overnight experience on the Reserve's property.
  *   Conduct engaging, hands-on lessons and activities both in the classroom and within the Research Reserve.  Ecosystems include woodlands, salt marshes, the estuary and shorelines which include Washburn Island.
  *   Teach and demonstrate principles of sustainability and stewardship in all programs.
  *   Plan, organize and conduct a weekly open house presentation for families to highlight student activities and achievements.
  *   Participate in a wrap-up meeting at the end of the season.

Schedule:

  *   Monday through Friday, 8:15AM to 3:30PM.

Preferred Qualifications:

*       Teaching experience working with children in the classroom as well as outdoor education and field experience.

*       Current CPR/ First Aid certification required prior to start date.

  *   Must be knowledgeable about marine biology and coastal ecology, in particular estuaries and salt marsh ecosystems, and comfortable working in the field and handling live marine invertebrates.
