TOWN OF SANDWICH - DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES

SEASONAL OPENING



The Town of Sandwich has an opening for one 19 hour-per-week Senior Seasonal Shorebird Specialist.  Senior Shorebird Specialist must have at least one full season of experience in shorebird protection efforts, resource management, nature education or equivalent. Certification in First Aid and C.P.R. required; First Responder, Wilderness, or other advanced medical certification preferred.  Position pays $15.00 per hour.  Position will start on or around April 1, 2019 and go through September 2, 2019.



Position will be responsible for conducting technical work assessing and monitoring shorebird nesting activity on Town of Sandwich beaches and associated sites, monitoring beach use for compliance with regulations governing Town of Sandwich beaches including site specific rules, applicable town ordinances and state and federal laws.



The Senior Seasonal Shorebird Specialist will be required to conduct Plover and Tern state censuses, enter data into Piplodes database online, conduct routine and thorough monitoring of beaches, identify shorebird species, maintain nesting spreadsheets and install symbolic fencing.



Position is required to work all weekends and holidays through term of employment and will work a variety of shifts, many beginning before 7:00 a.m. and may be subject to extremes of weather.



For Senior Shorebird Specialist: minimum college studies (complete or ongoing) with coursework in biology, wildlife management, ecology, or related field. Must possess valid license for operating motor vehicles in Massachusetts. Must be self-confident and able to exercise sound judgement and tact. Training will be provided.
