Spotlight Wild, an exciting new program For Immediate Release April 3, 2019 Orenda Wildlife Land Trust, National Marine Life Center & Cape Wildlife Center Launch Public Education Program Entitled Spotlight Wild (Barnstable, Cape Cod, Massachusetts)—The Cape Wildlife Center, the National Marine Life Center, and Orenda Wildlife Land Trust have launched Spotlight Wild. This public education initiative features an illustrated lecture and audience-driven panel discussion to explore how plastics in the environment, climate change, and water quality tamper with ecosystem health and the wildlife in marine waters and on land. “Spotlight Wild is an exciting new program that takes a multi-disciplinary look at problems facing the environments and wildlife of the Northeast,” says Zak Mertz, executive director of the Cape Wildlife Center. “By approaching these complex issues through the lens of three local environmental organizations, we hope to give the public an up-close look at the impacts we are already seeing and what can be done to help mitigate these impacts,” he added. Spotlight Wild kicks off on Thursday, April 4th, at 4 p.m., at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History located at 869 Main Street in Brewster. A second presentation is on Thursday, April 18th, at 2 p.m. at the Salt Pond Visitor’s Center, 50 Nauset Road in Eastham. Both lectures are free to the public. Kathy Zagzebski, executive director of the National Marine Life Center, says “Marine wildlife is part of Cape Cod’s cultural, environmental, and spiritual heritage. Through Spotlight Wild, we seek to explore the interconnectedness between people, animals, and nature on Cape Cod.” “Spotlight Wild is an opportunity for people to learn about how distinct ecosystems function and interact in relation to one another,” says Theresa Barbo, executive director of Orenda Wildlife Land Trust. “In turn, we can share what we know about the land and sea and the wild creatures who live in those environments.” Orenda Wildlife Land Trust works to preserve and protect open space for wildlife habitat, fresh air, and clean water, in sanctuary on Cape Cod and throughout Massachusetts. We own or manage twenty-seven sanctuaries covering over 475 acres. Orenda, which means ‘protected place’ in the language of the Seneca indigenous people, also partners with other land trusts in protecting nearly 800 acres of open space.
