Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to invite you to present a workshop or interactive demonstration at the 2019 High School Marine Science Symposium (HSMSS).<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.northeastern.edu%2Fcos%2Fmarinescience%2Foutreach%2Fhigh-school-marine-science-symposium%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7Ca44eccf3381043bfad9708d62df35d4b%7Ca8eec281aaa34daeac9b9a398b9215e7%7C0%7C0%7C636746920761423082&sdata=5zrd5KuKS4URKNiNlBsaXA1YJ8DfSX8SYFyTERT5iCk%3D&reserved=0> We’ve been lucky to have had great participation from the New England community in the past, so I hope you will consider being a part of this event again or for the first time.

This event is sponsored by the Massachusetts Marine Educators (MME)<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fma-marine-ed.org%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7Ca44eccf3381043bfad9708d62df35d4b%7Ca8eec281aaa34daeac9b9a398b9215e7%7C0%7C0%7C636746920761423082&sdata=MTIXo2%2BWtXKFptwNFHxRjrXZ%2BAZKt0x3%2BJExYnQpopA%3D&reserved=0> and the Northeastern University Marine Science Center<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnortheastern.edu%2Fcos%2Fmarinescience&data=02%7C01%7C%7Ca44eccf3381043bfad9708d62df35d4b%7Ca8eec281aaa34daeac9b9a398b9215e7%7C0%7C0%7C636746920761423082&sdata=5W3nnAEBE1gHQyiID7AeHW3YjFGlZL2veCEcYuscy6s%3D&reserved=0>. MME has been hosting the event for the past couple of decades with much success. Northeastern has been a co-host since 2013.

This year, we are hosting two events: Thursday, March 7th in Boston and Wednesday, March 13th in Salem.

Individuals or teams of presenters are invited to participate in one or both* of two different types of presenter opportunities:

  1. Deliver two, back-to-back, 40-minute, hands-on workshops to groups of ~20 students
  2. Deliver an interactive demonstration or activity at a table, with students circulating between a series of tables throughout each session

*If your organization/group would like to do both, please plan to send at least two presenters, as both workshops and table demos occur concurrently.

If you are willing and able to participate, click on the link here or at the bottom of the email to register<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.surveymonkey.com%2Fr%2FD6N88D9&data=02%7C01%7C%7Ca44eccf3381043bfad9708d62df35d4b%7Ca8eec281aaa34daeac9b9a398b9215e7%7C0%7C0%7C636746920761423082&sdata=JiWy94odgZeBlBpX7Zal6ckdehaph2uwsQkz7%2BZEz8Y%3D&reserved=0>.

The event schedule is below. During the sessions students will be attending two workshops, and during a third session will circulate between the table demos, meeting and networking with presenters like you! Workshops will conclude by ~11:30. All presenters are provided with a light breakfast and lunch, but staying for lunch is not required.

Event Schedule:

8:00-8:45 Presenter and student registration

8:45-8:55 Welcome/opening remarks

9:00-9:40 Session 1

9:50-10:30 Session 2

10:40-11:20 Session 3

11:30-12:10 Keynote

12:20 Lunch

1pm Event ends

The workshop or table demonstration topic would be of your choosing, however, we are asking that presentations be engaging, hands-on, interactive. It doesn't necessarily have to be your primary work/research focus and workshops can have more than one presenter per session. Here are some tips to consider when presenting to youth audiences<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flearn-differently.com%2Ffiles%2F2011%2F08%2Ftop-ten-mistakes-article-2011.pdf&data=02%7C01%7C%7Ca44eccf3381043bfad9708d62df35d4b%7Ca8eec281aaa34daeac9b9a398b9215e7%7C0%7C0%7C636746920761423082&sdata=%2FjIgGAt2lpURn9RQYLF6uPwgeuLG9ej%2F4HcF4cuHr9w%3D&reserved=0>. If you are interested, but worried about how you might fill 40 minutes, let us know – we may have some ideas to help make it a successful presentation.

Last year we had more interested presenters than slots available, so we are conducting the presenter recruiting process a bit differently for 2019. Once the call for presenters closes, we will review all submissions to curate a lineup that includes a diversity of topics/expertise. In early December, Emily will reach out to let you know if you've been selected to present.

If you are willing and able to participate, please register by Monday, November 5th by following this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/D6N88D9<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.surveymonkey.com%2Fr%2FD6N88D9&data=02%7C01%7C%7Ca44eccf3381043bfad9708d62df35d4b%7Ca8eec281aaa34daeac9b9a398b9215e7%7C0%7C0%7C636746920761578669&sdata=tPHrxrYyfqiZ5XgDlg%2Bdd75ROW3Tcnr%2FYZgX5C%2FX1kg%3D&reserved=0>

Please share this request with colleagues, students, and any other relevant contacts. We thank you for considering this opportunity to help inspire the next generation of marine scientists!

Best wishes,

Emily and the rest of the HSMSS organizing committee
