What can Henry David Thoreau tell us about climate change?  Biologist, researcher and author, Dr. Richard Primack, pays a visit to Cape Cod to discuss Thoreau's role in modern science and the insights provided by the 19th century naturalist on the Earth's changing climate in the 21st century. Primack has authored a book about his Concord research, Walden Warming: Climate Change Comes to Thoreau's Woods.

The presentation will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 11 at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth. Admission is free, but registration is requested at www.APCC.org/events<http://www.APCC.org/events>

The talk by Primack is sponsored by the Association to Preserve Cape Cod and is in conjunction with a month-long photo exhibition, "Thoreau, The Maine Woods to Cape Cod: A Journey in Photographs by Scot Miller," at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. The presentation and exhibition are part of APCC's continuing series of events commemorating the nonprofit environmental organization's 50th anniversary.

For the past 15 years, Primack and his Boston University research team have been using Thoreau's meticulous field notes from the 1850s and other Massachusetts data sources to document the earlier flowering and leafing out times of plants and the more variable response of migratory birds. These records from over 150 years ago were then compared to modern observations. The research has yielded an abundance of evidence showing how much New England's climate has changed since Thoreau's time.

Primack is a professor of biology with a specialization in plant ecology, conservation biology, tropical rain forest ecology, and climate change biology. For nine years, he was the editor-in-chief of the journal Biological Conservation and served as the president of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation.
