630 8 pm, Public Forum

Public Forum
Sierra Club Cape Cod Group
<https://www.sierraclub.org/massachusetts/cape-cod-group> is hosting a
public forum beginning at 6:30 pm on June 7 that will consider whether the
state and the Cape are doing enough to address solid waste management
challenges.

To be held at Brewster Ladies' Library, the forum will feature two speakers:
Kirstie Pecci, who leads the Conservation Law Foundation's Zero Waste
Project <https://www.clf.org/making-an-impact/zero-waste/> , and Kari
Parcell, who is the Cape's regional recycling coordinator, working through
the Barnstable County's Cooperative Extension Program and the Massachusetts
Department of Environmental Protection.

Ms. Pecci will cover the "State of the State," looking beyond traditional
bury-and-burn approaches and at the challenges created by China's new
restrictions on imports of recyclable materials. Ms. Purcell will address
the "State of the Cape," identifying key issues and effective solutions. In
addition, an expert panel will focus on successful and emerging solutions,
including the pay-as-you-throw programs adopted by Brewster and other towns;
Provincetown's bans of bags, straws, and other materials; and Yarmouth's
plans for a regional digester for diverting organics.

The same topics will be addressed earlier in the day at a Sierra Club
municipal workshop and roundtable focused on helping local officials learn
about best practices and success stories from other communities. Details
provided below.
