Sailors’ Valentines
with Artist Gregg Roberts


BREWSTER, MA ­ Naturescape Gallery at the Cape 
Cod Museum of Natural History is proud to present 
Sailors’ Valentines by artist Gregg Roberts May 1 ~ June 30, 2018. *

  Cape Cod native and Sailors’ Valentines award 
winning artist, Gregg Roberts, is a singer, poet 
and self-taught artisan.  He resides, teaches and 
maintains a studio in the seaside village of 
Cotuit, which houses an immense collection of 
shells and nautical memorabilia used in the creation of his distinctive works.

Gregg created his first Sailors’ Valentines in 
1984 following an inspirational recollection of 
seeing a Sailors’ Valentines on a childhood trip 
to the maritime museum at the Mystic Seaport in 
Connecticut.  From the beginning, his distinctive 
artistry became apparent as Gregg incorporated 
his knowledge of knot tying into the traditional 
shell based style of Barbados based Sailors’ 
Valentines artists favored by B. H. Belgrave.

Recognition of his talent followed quickly as 
Gregg participated in the Sanibel Shell Show, the 
oldest and most prestigious shell craft global 
competition, and won prizes in the professional 
Sailors’ Valentines and jewelry categories. He 
also has been recognized as one of the country’s 
most prominent artists in this genre by Grace L. 
Madeira in her seminal book, Sailors’ 
Valentines
Their Journey Through Time in which six of his pieces are featured.

Gregg Roberts will be giving a presentation at 
the Museum on Monday, June 11th at 1pm

Museum hours:  May ~ Wednesday - Sunday ~ 
11am-3pm / June ~ Open Daily ~ 9:30am-4pm
   Free with Museum Admission
