The Woods Hole Business Association <http://www.woodshole.com> and the
Woods Hole science community will present the second of two weekends of
free events this September to celebrate the legacy of Rachel Carson and
the global impact of local laboratories. “The Sea Around Us: You Are
What You Drink,” will commemorate the 11th Annual Buzzards Bay Watershed
Ride, which ends at the Marine Biological Laboratory’s Swope Center on
October 1.
The Buzzards Bay Coalition is a membership-supported nonprofit
organization dedicated to the restoration, protection, and sustainable
use and enjoyment of our irreplaceable Bay and its watershed. The
Coalition works to improve the health of the Bay ecosystem for all
through education, conservation, research, and advocacy.

Saturday, September 30: Special Events
10 AM – Noon
*Science in a Sandbox*
/Zephyr Education Center Foundation, 97 Water Street, Woods Hole/
Kids of all ages (and adults too!) will be captivated by the Augmented
Reality Sandbox, allowing users to explore sea level rise and storm
surge scenarios in real time. Learn about geoscience and have while fun
doing it!

*The History of the Pacific Guano Company*
Debbie Scanlon, Executive Director, Woods Hole Historical Museum
/Woods Hole Public Library, 581 Woods Hole Road/
In 1863, the Pacific Guano Company built its factory on Long Neck. Using
bird excrement imported from South America by clipper ships, and mixing
with with locally caught menhaden, the successful industry produced
fertilizer for more than 25 years. Find out why they abruptly went
bankrupt in 1889.

*Special Screening: A Plastic Ocean*
/WHOI Redfield Auditorium, 45 Water Street/
Couldn’t make it to the 2017 Woods Hole Film Festival? Enjoy a special
repeat screening of A PLASTIC OCEAN, presented by Woods Hole Film
Festival and sponsored by Quicks Hole. Journalist Craig Leeson,
searching for the elusive blue whale, discovers plastic waste in what
should be pristine ocean. Leeson uncovers alarming truths about plastic
pollution, and reveals working solutions that can be put into immediate
effect.
Sunday, October 1: Special Event

*Watershed Ride Finish Line Party*
/MBL Swope Center, 250 MBL Street/
Join the cheering section to welcome the riders and cap off this amazing
100-mile bike ride, spanning Little Compton, R.I. to Woods Hole, all in
support of Buzzards Bay Coalition’s vital work to protect and promote
clean waters. Cyclists are expected to reach the finish line between 2
and 4.

Discover the research happening at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
and the tools of their trade; get a glimpse into a day in the life of
the deep submersible Alvin, the discovery of the Titanic, and much more.

The Woods Hole Historical Museum is a lively small museum with changing
exhibits and diverse programs appealing to people with wide interests.
Currently on view: “Navigating the Seas in the Age of Sail” and “A
History of Shellfishing on Cape Cod.”

Colorful exhibits tell the story of the Marine Biological Laboratory and
its impact on life sciences. Live animals, stunning underwater video
footage, a hands-on microscope, and an interactive squid are all part of
the visitor experience. The gift shop has you covered with Rachel Carson
books and merchandise to commemorate your Cape Cod visit.

Home to more than 140 species of marine mammals, the aquarium offers
touch tanks of lobsters, horseshoe crabs, and starfish. Established in
Woods Hole in 1885, the WHSA is the country’s oldest marine aquarium. It
is owned by the federal government and operated by NOAA’s National
Marine Fisheries Service, in partnership with the Marine Biological
Laboratory.

The library boasts a collection of books, magazines and newspapers,
videos, books on cassette, music CDs, ebooks, and audiobooks totaling
nearly 40,000 items. It includes four special collections: the Thomas G.
Ratcliffe Collection of plays and books on theater and film, local
history, maritime books, and non-technical books on all of the sciences,
and is also home to a unique collection of historic paintings by
Franklin L. Gifford.
