The Hurricanes: Science and Society <http://hurricanescience.org/> (HSS) team at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography (URIO/GSO) will again partner with the NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) and the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center (AOC) to offer a hurricane preparedness webinar for 4th through 6th grade classes. The webinar will cover hurricane hazards, forecasting, observing hurricanes with airplanes, and hurricane preparedness. The purpose of the webinar is to raise understanding and awareness of hurricanes, hurricane hazards, and hurricane preparation in advance of the 2017 North Atlantic hurricane season. Videos, visualizations, graphics, and other media will be included to engage students. NHC forecasters and AOC aircraft personnel will speak live to the classrooms.
This free webinar on hurricanes will be offered on May 10, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. EDT (9:30 a.m. CDT). This webinar is part of the 2017 Hurricane Preparedness Week and the NOAA Hurricane Awareness Tour. The webinar will be broadcast live from the Raleigh, North Carolina stop of the Hurricane Awareness Tour.
Registration Information:
Schools/classes wanting to participate MUST REGISTER in advance. For information, or to register, go to: www.hurricanescience.org/webinar <http://www.hurricanescience.org/webinar>
Questions for hurricane scientists and aircraft personnel may be submitted ahead of time. The webinar platform also allows NHC/NOAA personnel and HSS staff to answer student questions in real time during the webinar. This year’s field location means that only a limited number of questions submitted ahead of time, and in real time, will be answered during the webinar. However, all questions submitted ahead of time and during the webinar will be answered in writing on the Hurricanes: Science and Society webinar page <http://www.hurricanescience.org/webinar> following the webinar.
