The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents
Digging Into the Past
“A Very Fine Place if the Harbor Were Good”
Samuel de Champlain’s 1605 Exploration of Cape Cod
with
Historian Bill Burke

BREWSTER, MA The Cape Cod Museum of Natural
History in Brewster presents “A Very Fine Place
if the Harbor Were Good”: Samuel de Champlain’s 1605 Exploration of Cape Cod
with Cape Cod National Seashore Historian Bill
Burke, Saturday April 1, 2017 at 1pm.

While French explorer Samuel de Champlain may
be most widely known as the “Father of New
France” (Canada), he left the earliest detailed
description of Cape Cod during his 1605
exploration of the New England coast from Acadia
to the Cape. Champlain left vivid descriptions
of the land, its native peoples, and the plants
and animals he encountered but do they correspond
with the Contact Period archeological record of
the Nauset Archeological District? And his
remarkable map of Nauset Marsh in present-day
Eastham is stunning in its detail, but does it
leave us with more questions than answers? Join
Park Historian Bill Burke as he takes the
audience on an illustrated journey going back 400
years to take a closer look at Champlain’s maps
and travel journal and discuss the possible
answers to these fascinating questions.

Bill Burke is the Historian for Cape Cod National
Seashore and he helps to preserve the Seashore's
exciting collection of museum objects, historic
buildings, special landscapes and archeology sites.
