Dear SEMCO,
It's hard to believe that the Summer Solstice is already behind us, but a full season
of summer fun is still ahead at PBCB!
Our First Sail program was a huge success, despite some challenges due to the weather.
It's great to see all those third graders (over 300 of them!) experiencing a boat
with no motor and learning about the bay.
Our boating programs are now underway and sign-ups are running ahead of previous
years, so be sure to sign up soon before programs fill up! Our first Friday Family
Friendly race and BBQ is next Friday evening. This is a wonderful opportunity for
the whole family to take sailing to the next level, or simply enjoy a meal by the
bay. The racing is friendly and the BYO BBQ afterwards even friendlier! Members
can skipper or crew on any of our Flying Scots; and if you don't sail, please come
for the BBQ.
Don't forget to check out our wonderful Marine Science programs. Two of them--STEM
to Stern, and Muddy Creek Explorers, which combine science with the glories of sailing--are
described below.
One year ago, PBCB as a founding member, helped to create the Cape Cod Climate Change
Collaborative [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001yUWsw4CAlE4ZG0Zf_CRHUH7j2vn-dox5a5kfVtUtdfzaDf_GN-TrCMetUdyfyPF5yLrFr8Wra8t0dunjUQW8_Ov1IKkXleLq9qH1awMK_7ZyPsIROZso2RP9q-a7g_JllYZ-9nefmnLbar7QlvTCqmozedIgen_27ZfQPmi-7ZMGRdAfj6RAulxDQJ_nNtgjGf1g1JULcq4ASInIuphcPmTnvfvmWWSPEvW2Vuf8voj9kclmZhrtMyl5_IwHheh9l4tcMc0ahXaCdTAjlYHipgAigfNfF-vhHvAQKRMGIzT9tQDtFNPWn__s7aVZALMKHGedws_eDivQnFGavvSxCg==&c=N4S9pJd14PZLpEmiu9ikLOkUZo22z36GN6TUg6rrKyaNwZoUe44ryg==&ch=GiOGGwElEqIFIcHAStwSI1N22GCf9HOAAiekCNR58Xk12C8IVLOvxg==].
What a year it's been! Please visit this new website, see all we've accomplished,
and learn what's coming up next!
You may have seen news coverage about PBCB in the local papers as well as the feature
story in Edible Cape Cod. You will also be seeing us in both the Orleans and Chatham
4th
of July parades and at Brewster Conservation Day. We hope to see you at one of these
events.
As always, the contributions of our generous donors, corporate partners and amazing
volunteers are helping build an important community resource for area residents
and visitors. We put a volunteer in the spotlight each month but, in fact, there
are just too many people to thank individually...so I will just say "many, many
thanks to one and all!"
Now it's time to get out there and enjoy!

STEM-to-Stern
The wind above, the water below, and everything on a sailboat in between!
This program provides hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for young boaters
by making powerful connections between sailing and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Math) disciplines. The focus is on teaching powerful lessons in earth science, physics,
engineering, geometry, chemistry, ocean science
and math.
Conducted in the PBCB boathouse, on the beach and in sailboats, classes are taught
by U.S. Sailing REACH-trained instructors and vary in content each day.
Sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 until 12:00. For more
information and to register, click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001yUWsw4CAlE4ZG0Zf_CRHUH7j2vn-dox5a5kfVtUtdfzaDf_GN-TrCMetUdyfyPF5UaYSO-RZn4Xm7BNPNfcWn2VOWE_YXrbFXv19W0i9KQNhUUj8RFfmIfVR2MpIcCxgaxtlgM0EDKqI8BxNfIOfwmYIz8MLQDyta0XmGqvnSZ3PYau4-l3px0F2nFCvvvQDs5BN6_Vl9mRPGokHtDMMibYos_cUWML7F8tZJ_NlKd_ZbxNGPOIvqD3Hg5VK6ky5fIEasojlltkYZyfnmfyOV8aOh4xwj3Sm-zl3Rn25NgOayvo39-RXRbW5fnqxtn8BZicoXOJqbXM-UADRwNQRn9xOr_QQdwDrWVn1ooJJbrk=&c=N4S9pJd14PZLpEmiu9ikLOkUZo22z36GN6TUg6rrKyaNwZoUe44ryg==&ch=GiOGGwElEqIFIcHAStwSI1N22GCf9HOAAiekCNR58Xk12C8IVLOvxg==].

Muddy Creek Explorers
Come explore, get your hands dirty, and be part of an exciting marine restoration
project where you'll be collecting and analyzing data! The Muddy Creek Restoration
Project is a multi-year engineering project to restore tidal flow into the Muddy
Creek wetlands near Jackknife Cove, vastly improving the marine health and navigability
of the area. The completed bridge reconstruction is already changing the ecosystem.
We'll explore the area in canoes and kayaks, conduct water quality analysis using
professional equipment, observe shellfish, birds and plant life populations, and
work with scientists and engineers. Students will gain technical skills used by
the Pleasant Bay Alliance "Water Watchers" program. Held every Friday morning from
9am-12 noon starting July 7. For more information and to register, click here. "Getting waist-deep in science":
Cape Cod Chronicle features PBCB's Bioblitz
The Cape Cod Chronicle recently spotlighted PBCB's Bioblitz event, held on May 25
on our campus. The article included a photo gallery of Monomoy High School biology
students braving the wind and rain to explore marine life of Pleasant Bay and obtain
samples for genetic testing through Northeastern University's Ocean Genome Legacy
Project. Edible Cape Cod: Cape Cod food, climate change and PBCB!
What do local Cape food production, climate change and PBCB have to do with one
another? Local journalist Aline Lindeman connects the dots. In the Spring edition
of Edible Cape Cod, the quarterly magazine that investigates and celebrates local,
organic food of Cape Cod, Lindeman explores the connections between climate change
and food production on the Cape. Along the way, she pauses to explore how the origins
of Pleasant Bay Community Boating fit into this story. Curious? To read this timely
and thought provoking article, click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001yUWsw4CAlE4ZG0Zf_CRHUH7j2vn-dox5a5kfVtUtdfzaDf_GN-TrCMetUdyfyPF5Ti_5C9b_gfry-ULlJzEw0vD2Tfbdc735rHn5Yjk9AkkmMnH-w7VUefB6xM1bO2FvGD4pt2-ztCHiC4YMhI-YtBu5FsM1vIBidhGM08CDdCtHqhb8O7pFF4wE5fDt1e9ipiOVGowKQcfQmjHNCHoS4mJZWzWf5f-MqYLLFE0m3YU36PstzrsCuqoU2WENSJGqamL8Oh_18_udQdt9SwOFkjEykOMaNOab_isUsIOrEyWYzTLyl7CZtyBRII7liAJSO6URQ5XTjSWO-Pr2mi6P3kTce280bMjkFcEJGaiA21OUWihq4WzTvbf50GtqCJ-IFG6GMs_-i475I6BM8hAdzUOArdXbq-Hi&c=N4S9pJd14PZLpEmiu9ikLOkUZo22z36GN6TUg6rrKyaNwZoUe44ryg==&ch=GiOGGwElEqIFIcHAStwSI1N22GCf9HOAAiekCNR58Xk12C8IVLOvxg==].

Third Year...First Sail!
For the third consecutive year, our signature First Sail program introduced third
graders from the Monomoy and Nauset Regional School Districts to sailing on Pleasant
Bay.
During the month of June, we welcomed more than 300 students from Chatham, Harwich,
Orleans, Brewster, Eastham and Wellfleet Elementary schools to the campus - and
the kids loved it! For some of them, this was truly their "first sail."
Through First Sail, students engage with the marine environment of Pleasant Bay
and experience the thrill of sailing. We hope many of these new sailors return to
our campus during the season and eventually become PBCB members, sailors, paddlers
and, of course, future stewards of the bay. We thank the Friends of Pleasant Bay
for their generous grant that made this program possible. "Friday Family Friendly" Races &
BYO BBQ are back!
Starting June 30 and through the end of August, PBCB is the place to be on Friday
evenings. Come race in a Flying Scot or just enjoy a BYO cookout on Pleasant Bay.
If you are a PBCB member sailor, please join our "Friday Family Friendly Races"
at PBCB! You can sign up and reserve a boat for your family, or sign up to skipper
or help crew in a boat. The fun events starts at 5:00 PM and usually consist of
4 short races in front of the PBCB campus. Sailors are matched up to balance skill
and experience levels. Depending on experience, members can skipper, crew or take
turns.
And if you aren't a sailor, or simply not yet comfortable racing, please join us
for the BBQ portion of the evening. Everyone is welcome to bring his/her own provisions,
use our grill and picnic tables, enjoy a BYO cookout on the bluff overlooking the
bay during and after the races. Arrive anytime after 5PM and bring a friend to join
in the fun. There's no charge to just come and cook out.
This is a great way to meet other members, learn the basics of sailboat racing in
a relaxed and friendly environment, and have a great time in an amazing spot! For
scheduling, registration and nominal boat fees (no charge to just come and cook
out!) click here. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Owen Nichols, PhD candidate,
Center for Coastal Studies
PBCB is fortunate to have some exceptionally talented and skilled volunteers on
our team, and this month we are shining our Volunteer Spotlight on one of them:
Owen Nichols. An expert in his field, Owen is volunteering educational services
in one of our newest collaborative marine education programs, "Fins, Whiskers, Claws"
and we are enormously pleased to have him on our staff! As Owen says, "One of the
main reasons I like working with PBCB is the collaborative educational mission.
The PBCB campus is a nexus around which scientists, educators and students can gather
to teach and learn in a stimulating learning environment, all at the edge of the
living laboratory of Pleasant Bay. It's truly a special place!" To read more about
Owen Nichols and his work, click here. Located in Harwich Port center, the baseball-themed Hot Stove Saloon is a well-known
and well-loved spot to meet friends, watch a ball game and enjoy great food, including
fresh local seafood. You should know that they do not accept credit cards. Why not?
To avoid paying the bank's credit card fees. They can instead donate those funds
to local charities and good causes. Over the years, dozens of worthy Cape Cod non-profits
have been beneficiaries of this policy, receiving donations that help to support
their missions. Last month, PBCB received a generous donation from the Hot Stove
to support our Blind and Vision-Impaired Sailing program. We are extremely grateful
to the Hot Stove and owner Gabe Leidner for this support for an important program.
So get some cash from an ATM and head over to Harwich Port to the Hot Stove Saloon.
We'll see you there!
Ocean Edge Landscaping
Ocean Edge Landscaping is a family-owned, full service landscape company that has
operated on the Lower Cape for more than 30 years. This year, Ocean Edge Landscaping
has provided, free of charge, all grass maintenance services for PBCB, which is
no small feat given our large, rolling blufftop campus. And they help because, as
CEO Rob Bloomer says, "we want to support all the great work PBCB is doing for the
community." Ocean Edge Landscaping serves the towns of Orleans, Chatham, Brewster,
Harwich and Eastham, and does everything from spring cleanups, edging, mulching,
and lawn maintenance to annual beds, planting and garden maintenance. To learn
more about Ocean Edge Landscaping's services, click here.
