The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents
Digging Into the Past
Who Are The Cape Verdeans?
  with
   Barbara Monteiro Burgo

BREWSTER, MA The Cape Cod Museum of Natural
History in Brewster presents “Who Are the Cape
Verdeans” with Barbara Monteiro Burgo, Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 1pm.

The Archipelago of 10 islands known as the Cape
Verde Islands in the Atlantic is approximately
380 miles off the West Coast of Africa, near
Senegal. Many who live here on Cape Cod have
heard that the cranberry industry was built on
the backs of Cape Verdean immigrants especially
in places like Harwich, Plymouth and Wareham,
however, most don’t know of the early settlements
on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. According to
the Nantucket Historical Society, the early Cape
Verdean immigrants were recruited by outward
bound Nantucket whaleship voyages that stopped at
the Cape Verde islands of Brava and Fogo. Some of
these crewmen came back to Nantucket, settled
on-island and found wives in Nantucket’s African American community.

Join Barbara Burgo for a presentation and
discussion on the history of Cape Verdeans on
Cape Cod and how a small group of local Cape
Verdeans have been educating Cape Cod residents,
visitors and school children about the long and
amazing journey of many of the earliest Cape Verdeans to these shores.

Barbara Burgo is from Taunton, MA and graduated
in 2005 from Rhode Island College with a Major in
Cultural Anthropology (Magna Cum Laude) and a
Minor in Women’s Studies. In 2012, she returned
to her “roots” and served as Curator for a Cape
Verdean Summer Exhibit titled So Sabi! (Loosely
translated as So Good!) at the Brooks Academy Museum in Harwich
