Newly Funded Ocean Acidification Research
MIT Sea Grant has selected three research projects for funding from our annual request
for proposals. The projects focus on developing new ocean acidification sensor technology
and using modeling to consolidate historical data to inform coastal ocean acidification
monitoring.

Dr. Robyn Hannigan: Using Lobster Shells to Understand the Past
MIT Sea Grant funded reseracher, Dr. Robyn Hannigan is a mineralogist, but instead
of rocks, she studies lobster's shells. Hannigan and her collaborators are looking
at how the combined effects of increasing ocean acidity and increasing ocean temperature
affect lobster shells. Higher ocean temperatures can promote bacterial growth -
which can actually infect lobster shells in what is known as epizootic shell disease.

Dr. Don Anderson: Using Robots to Measure Toxins in the Ocean
MIT Sea Grant funded researcher, Don Anderson, and colleagues have developed a robotic
system that can monitor blooms of toxic algae and their toxins in real time. This
system, built around two instruments - a submersible "cytobot" that dives down
to photograph algae where they emit their toxins and a second sophisticated robot
that directly measures just how much toxin is around, is demonstrating a new vision
for how we may protect seafood safety in the future.

Cranberry Bog Farm to Coastal Wetland
Tidmarsh Farms is the largest wetland restoration in the state of Massachusetts
with over 200 acres in Plymouth, MA. Once a functioning cranberry bog farm, the
Living Observatory is working to restore the area back to its original state as
a coastal wetland. MIT Sea Grant Advisory Lead, Rob Vincent, will use the site to
study the entire restoration process from start to finish, monitoring green house
gas emissions and carbon storage in the soil.

Changing Habitats: Settlement of Non-Native Marine Species
MIT Sea Grant researchers Judith Pederson and Carolina Bastidas are exploring the
abundances of native and non-native species in New England. The project is designed
to improve our understanding of how non-native species change ecosystem dynamics
 and often become competitively dominant.

Coastal Resilience, Invasive Species, and Carbon Cycling in Coastal Dune Habitat
MIT Sea Grant coastal ecologist and Advisory Lead, Rob Vincent, is working with
the EPA and National Park Service to characterize carbon cycling in coastal dune
habitats. The information generated by this work will be included in the EPA "Blue
Carbon" coastal carbon cycling model currently under development.

Madonna Yoder is recognized for Excellence in Undergraduate Research
Madonna Yoder, recipient of the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research,
was involved in virtually all phases of the Lower Charles River Chart Project, including
installation of data logging equipment, sonar field survey work, data processing
and analysis, and chart development. She faced each aspect of the project with
fortitude, aggressively anticipating problems and finding solutions.
