The Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. To carry out this mission, the Department exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife species, plants, and natural communities, as well as the habitats that support them.
 
The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries serves Massachusetts' citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats, while providing sustainable fisheries related recreational and commercial opportunities.

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG), Division of Marine Fisheries  (DMF) seeks applicants for a Seasonal Seagrass Restoration and Habitat Technician (contract employee).  The individual will work on the DFG In Lieu Fee (ILF) project under the requirements of the federal Compensatory Mitigation Rule promulgated by the Army Corps of Engineers ("ACOE", or "Corps") and the United States Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") at 33 C.F.R. Part 332 (the "Mitigation Rule").
 
The Seasonal Technician will assist DMF program personnel with field, laboratory, and administrative work associated with an ILF eelgrass (Zostera marina) restoration and monitoring project.  Administrative tasks may include logging data into an Access database, filing paperwork, reviewing environmental documents and archiving survey data in a database or geodatabase. 
 
DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists biologist and SCUBA divers in the field on research vessels and small craft. 
Assists with maintenance and preparation of field and laboratory equipment.
Processes seagrass samples in the lab as needed and according to Standard Operating Procedures.
Enters data into Access and Excel databases.
Files and organizes digital data including photos and videos.
Files and archives paperwork according to document retention rules.
Performs literature reviews.
Drafts, reviews and edits technical documents as needed
Performs other related duties as assigned..
 
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledges, skills, abilities):
Experience with operating small, motorized vessels in coastal waters under various weather conditions, including boat trailering.
Computer proficiency including a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access, Google Earth and ArcGIS.
Knowledge of sampling design and application.
Knowledge of fisheries biology and management.
Experience compiling data in tabular and graphical form.
Ability to follow guidelines and procedures.
Good physical condition, ability to regularly lift 50lbs, and ability to work long hours in strenuous situations. Job will require some work on weekends and some longer/earlier/later than normal workdays.
Ability to communicate effectively and cooperatively with others.in a team environment.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Ability to speak effectively, prepare written technical reports, and write clearly and concisely.
Ability to prioritize tasks.
Demonstrated ability to follow-through and complete tasks.
Experience with maintaining small boats.
Knowledge of basic SCUBA safety and equipment protocols.
CPR /basic first aid certified.
 
 
 
Qualifications
 
 
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT AND SUBSTITUTIONS:
 
A Bachelors' degree in an environmental science field (biology, geology, marine science, etc.).
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
 
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's Class D license or equivalent license from the state in which you reside.
