Be sure to join scientists, informal and formal educators, students, and others at the 2016 Ocean Literacy Summit <http://www.neosec.dreamhosters.com/previous-summits/2016-ocean-literacy-summit/> hosted by the New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative (NEOSEC) <http://www.neosec.dreamhosters.com/>! The 2016 Summit will take place along the working waterfront of Portland, Maine, on November 3 and 4, 2016, and will focus on the latest research and education activities surrounding Ocean Literacy (OL) principle #3: “The ocean is a major influence on weather in climate.”
There is still time to register as well as receive the conference rate ($119/night) for your accommodations at the Courtyard Marriott Portland Downtown. Rooms are going quickly! Please use this link <http://www.marriott.com/meeting-event-hotels/group-corporate-travel/groupCorp.mi?resLinkData=OCEAN%20LITERACY%20SUMMIT%5Epwmcd%60NOSNOSA%7CNOSNOSB%60119%60USD%60false%601%6011/2/16%6011/5/16%6010/8/16&app=resvlink&stop_mobi=yes> to book and receive the conference rate. To review registration rates and/or register for the Summit, please go here <http://www.neosec.dreamhosters.com/2016-ocean-literacy-summit/2016-summit-registration/>. Registration for the Summit will close on October 20, 2016.
This year's summit will feature a keynote presentation given by Dr. Andy Pershing, Chief Scientific Officer and Ecosystem Modeler at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute <http://www.gmri.org/>. Dr. Pershing's research focuses on the causes and consequences of changing conditions in the Gulf of Maine, and he is an expert on how climate variability and climate change impact the ecosystems in the northwest Atlantic. His presentation, “How the Gulf of Maine can help us learn to live in a warmer world”, will no doubt be informative and data driven, one not to be missed!
Other experts in climate change research, ocean science, and education will present during the Summit's lightening presentations. These 5-minute presentations given by scientist and educator pairs will be an exciting way to learn about the fundamental concepts under OL principle #3. Each lightning talk session will be followed by time for discussion, and concluding cafes at the end of the day will offer time and space for open discussions. We encourage Summit participants to be active in learning more about what interests them most!
We hope to see you in Portland in November!
