The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) seeks applicants for a Fisheries Technician (Contracted Seasonal Employee).
The seasonal Fisheries Technician will assist DMF program personnel with preparation and analysis of tissue samples of Atlantic bluefin tuna for carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis as part of a study using chemical tracers to assess connectivity between Atlantic feeding grounds and Gulf of Mexico spawning grounds The incumbent will assist other MADMF Program personnel with additional projects as needed.
DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Dissect, clean, dry, homogenize, and weigh fish tissue samples in preparation for stable isotope analysis.
Enter and organize data into Excel spreadsheets.
Assist in data analysis, interpretation, and report writing.
Assist other MADMF projects with conducting research when time permits.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledges, skills, abilities):
Knowledge of the principles and practices of marine and fisheries biology.
Prior wet and dry lab experience.
Experience with the methods and software used for data entry and the preparation of charts, graphs and tables.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
Completed college courses in biology, ecology, environmental science, chemistry or similar subject.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience processing aquatic biological samples for chemical analyses.
Knowledge of fisheries biology and management.
Working knowledge of computer word processing and spreadsheet software including MSWORD and EXCEL.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
