              One Big Home

The Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) will present "One Big Home", 8PM at the Chatham Orpheum, 637 Main St, Chatham.

Trophy homes threaten the unique character of Martha's Vineyard. Ten, fifteen, even twenty-thousand-square-foot houses are going up around the island. Not only do these mansions stand in stark contrast to traditional cottages, most sit empty for ten months a year yet are heated year round. Thomas Bena, carpenter turned filmmaker, trades his tool belt for a camera to document what appeared to be a changing paradigm in the community. Over the period of 12 years, his own journey is intertwined with his effort to work with his community in an attempt to create a new bylaw that would limit house size. "We all want a community," Mr. Bena said at a recent showing of the film. "We don't want to come to an empty place. So I think we have a lot of work to do, and I hope the film begins to spark that conversation."

"I hope my film will spark a discussion about the way we regard housing, land ownership, and the economic forces that shape our communities. Rather than throwing up our arms and saying 'you can't fight progress,' communities can stand up for themselves, their way of life, and the natural environment." - Thomas Bena, Director - One Big Home

Following the film, filmmaker Thomas Bena will join the audience via skype for a Q & A and discussion period. (film is unrated, 89min)
