Planet Mercury Transit
May 9, 2016, 7:00am - 3:00pm Free - Open to all
Telescope will be located outside the Waquoit Bay Reserve Visitor Center, 131 Waquoit Highway, Waquoit, MA 02536
Waquoit Bay Reserve invites you to join researcher, Vitalii Sheremet, in viewing the planet Mercury as it transits across the face of the sun. Vitalii will be setting up his telescope on the bluff outside the Visitor Center on Monday, May 9th from 7AM to 3PM to view this relatively rare phenomenon. The transit will occur between 7:12am and 2:42pm. The most exciting part of the transit will be at the end, around 2:40pm when the dark disk of the Mercury will be sliding off the bright disk of the sun.
>From the Earth, only transits of Mercury and Venus are possible to see. There are approximately 13 transits of Mercury each century. In comparison, transits of Venus occur in pairs with more than a century separating each pair.
