The Center for Coastal Studies presents “The Trials of Being a Cetacean in
an Ocean Full of Noise” by Christopher W. Clark, PhD on Wednesday, April 6
at 7 pm at Napi’s Restaurant, 7 Freeman Street, Provincetown.
In the underwater world, whales and many other animals rely on sound to
communicate with one another, to navigate through ocean basins, and to find
food.
However, humans have created so much noise from shipping vessels,
underwater energy exploration and development, sonar exploration, and other
activities, that we are drowning out the sounds of whales; in fact,
scientists estimate that the area over which right whales can hear one
another has dropped by 90 percent because of noise pollution.
Chris Clark will discuss the potential cost of the destruction of the
natural marine bioacoustic environment to whales and other cetaceans, and
examine how dramatic changes in ocean science, technology and science
activism offer huge opportunities for discover and enlightenment.
Chris Clark, PhD is the I.P. Johnson Director of the Bioacoustics Research
Program at Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. He is an expert on the
science of sound and the effects of noise on whales, and was recently
featured in the award winning documentary “Racing Extinction”. He is also a
member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Coastal Studies in
Provincetown.
