Did you know that the Coonamessett River was once home to a thriving Sea-run Brook Trout population? It was so speculator that in the 1880s the wealthy CE Roberts leased a portion of the river from the Town to have exclusive rights to fishing the river for "salters" or sea-run brook trout. Please join us this Thursday to hear Steve Hurley talk about his efforts to protect the Sea-run Brook Trout in Massachusetts.
Steve Hurley, the Commonwealth's point person for restoration of native sea-run brook trout in Southeastern Massachusetts, will speak on "Cape Cod's Sea-run Brook Trout: Here today and gone tomorrow?" on Thursday, March 24 at 7:30 PM at the Falmouth Public Library. The talk is sponsored by the Coonamessett River Trust. Mr. Hurley, who is the Southeast District Fisheries Manager for the MA Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, will describe the challenges and successes of re-establishing the iconic "salter" trout in our local rivers including Red Brook, the Coonamessett, Quashnet, and Mashpee. Attendees will learn just how small the differences are between success and failure, and how local land use practices can affect outcomes. Admission is free. See the Coonamessett River Trust’s Facebook page for additional information. https://www.facebook.com/Coonamessett-River-Trust-154082221281677/?ref=bookmarks
